Implementing activities in your classroom that address all four learning styles
Kolb's Four Styles of Learning
This clinic is about learning styles, how you learn and how you can
become a better instructor by implementing activities in your classroom
that address all 4 learning styles.
David Kolb (1984) found that the four combinations of perceiving
and processing determine the four learning styles. According to Kolb,
the learning cycle involves four processes that must be present for
learning to occur:
- Activist - Active Experimentation (simulations, case study,
homework). What's new? I'm game for anything. Training approach -
Problem solving, small group discussions, peer feedback, and homework
all helpful; trainer should be a model of a professional, leaving the
learner to determine her own criteria for relevance of materials.
- Reflector - Reflective Observation (logs, journals,
brainstorming). I'd like time to think about this. Training approach -
Lectures are helpful; trainer should provide expert interpretation
(taskmaster/guide); judge performance by external criteria.
- Theorist - Abstract Conceptualization (lecture, papers,
analogies). How does this relate to that? Training approach - Case
studies, theory readings and thinking alone helps; almost everything
else, including talking with experts, is not helpful.
- Pragmatist - Concrete Experience (laboratories, field work,
observations). How can I apply this in practice? Training approach -
Peer feedback is helpful; activities should apply skills; trainer is
coach/helper for a self-directed autonomous learner.
Experiential Learning: Experience as the source of learning and development
(1984)

provided by the ECM.

Guest Artist, Simon Trpceski
From Conservatory to Concert Hall! ----Simon Trpceski---- http://www.simontrpceski.com/
<---topics include--->
preparing for competitions finding an agent making recording and much much more!!!
Since giving an exceptional Wigmore Hall debut recital in June 2001,
Simon Trpceski has established himself as one of the most remarkable
young talents to have emerged in recent years. He is now a favourite
with UK audiences and his highly successful 2004 Proms debut with the
Scottish Chamber Orchestra prompted the Independent’s critic to write
“people will be auctioning tickets for Simon Trpceski soon”. He plays
each season with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall,
and has recently given his second concert at the Barbican with the BBC
Symphony Orchestra. Next season he makes his debut with the London
Philharmonic Orchestra. He also plays regularly with many provincial
orchestras, this season returning to the BBC Scottish Symphony
Orchestra and to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for the third time,
and has made his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2004/05 season Simon will also make his debut with the DSO
Berlin, the Netherlands Philharmonic and the Swedish Chamber
Orchestras. Recent engagements have included his debut with the
Helsinki Philharmonic, a return visit to the Sydney Symphony, as well
as the Stockholm and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestras, Orchestre National
de Lille, the Tonhalle Orchestra at the invitation of the Orpheum
Foundation, and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent recital
engagements include the Louvre in Paris, Concertgebouw small hall, Hong
Kong City Hall, Dublin National Concert Hall, Bilbao Philharmonic
Society and the Bath Festival, and in June he will give his fifth
recital at the Wigmore Hall in London.
In the USA Simon recently made a very successful debut with the San
Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and also performed with the Indianapolis
Symphony and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestras. Later this season he will
have his debut with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and will return to
the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. This summer he will make his debut with
the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl and in
October with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra He has made several
recitals tours including Vancouver, Kansas City, Atlanta, San
Francisco, Ravinia, Seattle and Toronto.
Simon’s first recital recording, as part of the EMI Classics’ Debut
Series, features music by Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky and
Prokofiev. It received both the Editor’s Choice and the Debut Album
Awards at the Gramophone Awards, and in Gramophone Magazine Bryce
Morrison wrote “Everything is musically and ardently inflected and
while Trpceski’s virtuoso voltage … is awe-inspiring, his unfailing
musicianship is even more remarkable”. Simon’s second recital
recording, an all Rachmaninov disc, has just been released and marks
his transition to EMI Classic’s main label.
Born in the Republic of Macedonia in 1979, Simon Trpceski has won
prizes in international piano competitions in the UK (World Piano
Competition 2000), Czech Republic and Italy. In July 2002 he graduated
from the Faculty of Music of the University of St Cyril and St
Methodius in Skopje where he studied with Professor Boris Romanov. He
was a member of the BBC New Generation Scheme 2001 – 2003 and in May
2003 he was awarded the ‘Young Artist Award’ by the Royal Philharmonic
Society.

Guest Artists, DeVotchka
"Out of the Box!" A wholly unique
mélange of Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and American Punk and Folk
music, DeVotchKa truly has no musical peers. And while the band’s genre
descriptors and untraditional musical line up- upright bass, violin,
tuba, accordion, drums, harmonica and guitar- may appear on paper to be
wildly inaccessible-- nothing could be further from the truth.
DeVotchKa was recently named "The Best Underground Band in Colorado" by
a panel of industry insiders for the Denver Post. The group (including
former CU student Tom Hagerman) discussed various aspects of
their careers within this unique and successful ensemble.
