Cover Letter Writing Tips
- A cover letter accompanies the résumé.
- Use the cover letter to explain information impossible to simply list on
a résumé.
- Show how your skills and experience match the duties in the job description.
- Always send your letter and résumé to a specific person.
- The letterhead of your stationery should match the heading of your résumé.
- Keep your letter to one page in length.
- Write in a clear, concise style.
- In paragraph one, state the reason for the letter and how you heard of the
job opening. If someone referred you to the opening, use his or her name here.
- In paragraph two, highlight your strengths and experiences as they relate
to the position. Demonstrate how you will be an asset to the organization.
- In the closing paragraph, state why you are enthusiastic about working for
this organization and describe how you will follow-up on your application.
- Use action verbs to describe your accomplishments and skills.
- Be enthusiastic and personable.
- Have a friend proofread your letter before mailing. It must be error free.
- Keep a copy of letters and all other job search-related materials in a notebook.
- Review all correspondence before placing a follow-up call.
